YOUNG ORATORS-VI
THE FINALS- DETAILS AND GUIDELINES

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the semi-finals held on Sunday the 15th of December. It is heartening to know that over 60 speakers from 13 different schools of Surat took part in the two semi-finals. Earlier, the Vadodara semi-finals were conducted the week before in which 9 schools took part. About 25 schools are expected to take part at the finals of Young Orators-VI to be held in Surat on the 5th of January, 2014. We indeed feel humbled by the continued support of all schools to Young Orators and promise to do our best to keep up the quality and tempo of the event in the times to come.

YOUNG ORATORS-VI, THE FINALS

The finals of Young Orators-VI shall be held in the auditorium of L.P.Savani International School, Pal starting at 11 AM on Sunday, the 5th of January. We feel confident the students will have a great time speaking and competing in the well-equipped auditorium of L.P.Savani International School, Pal, Surat.

THE TEAM CONSTITUTION:

A team of two has already been selected for most schools at the semi-finals. Each school shall be represented by this team at the finals. Other members of the semi-final team and of course all students who are interested are welcome to attend the finals.
Schools that could not attend the semi-finals can select a team of two students from class IX and XI (any combination) and e mail us the names of the students by December 31st

THE EVENT:
THE FLOW OF YOUNG ORATORS-VI FINALS SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS:
TEAM MEMBER 1: PREPARED SPEECH

One of the two team members shall speak a prepared speech. This topic shall be sent to the schools at least ten days in advance, to give students adequate time to prepare. The students are expected to speak for a maximum of 2 ½ minutes. As this is an oratory competition, students will speak on different topics. A topic may be repeated for more than one school, but this is not for comparison- just to hear another perspective on the same issue from another speaker. Students are advised to keep the criteria for judgement and lessons from the workshops and semi-finals in mind as they prepare for their speeches. Schools must send us the names of the prepared speakers by January the 2nd.

TEAM MEMBER 2: EXTEMPORE SPEECH + DEBATE

The second speaker will speak extempore on a topic which has been provided then and there. This is the extempore round. A speaker is expected to speak for a maximum of 2 minutes in the extempore round. The speaker will be informed of his topic and will also be informed if he is to speak for or against the topic. No supporting material/laptop services are likely to be provided for preparing these speeches. However, students may take the help of Member 1 to prepare their speeches. He shall be given approximately 20 minutes to prepare.
A total of four speakers( from different schools, as announced) will speak on the topic, with two in favour and two against the topic. This shall be followed be a small debate in which the speakers will be allowed to question opposing teams and put forward their points more strongly. Thus, in case the topic given is: “Hindi should be made compulsory in schools across India”, two speakers will speak for the topic, followed by two against the topic. Thereafter, there shall be a ten minute debate/discussion on the topic.

IN THIS WAY, THE EVENT SHALL PROCEED FOR ALL GROUPS

[It may be noted that the number of teams in each such debate may vary from 4 to 6 and all topics need not be for-against topics. However, the basic format for the Extempore round shall remain the same, with extra marks added for overall impact during the debate/discussion]
